One of the most successful book to movie crossovers of its time was Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code books 1 and 2. Not only did they get Ron Howard (Apollo 13) to direct, they also got superstar Tom Hanks to star as its titular character, Robert Langdon. The first installment, The Da Vinci Code was a major success, which grossed more than $750 million worldwide.
Its sequel, Angels And Demons, though not as successful as the first, also pulled in great earnings, at $500 million in the global box office.
But production did not push through for the third book, The Lost Symbol, and the books and the movies based off it were soon forgotten.
Today, in a surprise turn of events, it seems that we will be seeing on the big screen soon, a Da Vinci Code 3 Inferno. But it won't be based on Dan Brown's third book, The Lost Symbol. Rather, it would be about the fourth book in the Robert Langdon series -- Inferno.
According to Deadline, the Tom Hanks and Ron Howard team will be back for The Da Vinci Code 3 Inferno, and that production on the movie will begin in April 2015, and it will be shot in Italy.
The book Inferno once again revolves around Robert Langdon, but our hero Harvard professor of iconology and symbology, is suffering from a mild case of amnesia because of an accident that he doesn't remember. The nemesis that Langdon will have to face this time around is a person is mad genius scientist obsessed with the book Dante's Inferno by Dante Alighieri, who is bent on solving the world's problem with overpopulation by unleashing a deadly virus.
The movie will be written by David Koepp, while Brian Grazer is a co-producer along with Ron Howard. The Da Vinci Code 3 Inferno has a tentative release date of December 18, 2015.
