Which phablet device is the better choice for consumers? We pit the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra against the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100 to see which is worth the purchase.
In terms of design and display, the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra has a 6 inches Triluminos IPS LCD display which uses Mobile BRAVIA engine 2 for excellent color reproduction, so users will have an amazing experience as long as they don’t use the device in direct sun light. Its screen resolution is at 720x1280 pixels and the pixel density is at 245ppi. It weights almost 172 grams and its dimensions are 165.2×83.8×7.7 mm. It comes in white, black and purple and has the power button, camera buton and volume rocker on the upper right side.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100 has the indispensable S Pen stylus, a power button located on the right edge, the volume rocker on the right, the audio jack on the top, and the USB charging is in the opposite side. It has a 5.5 inches Super AMOLED, which has the same resolution as it rival, but the pixel density is at 267ppi. It weighs 183 grams and the dimensions are 151.1×80.5×9.4 mm.
For the hardware and OS, The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra has a quad core 1.4GHz Cortex A7 processor supported by a Qualcomm MSM8928 Snapdragon 400 chipset, it uses an Adreno 305 GPU and it hosts 1GB of RAM. Its internal memory is at 8GB, expandable up to 32GB and it runs on the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) OS, but user can upgrade it to v4.4.2 (KitKat). Also, there are 6 home screens which users can customize on.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N1700 has a quad core 1.6GHz Cortex A9 processor, which is based on an Exynos 4412 Quad chipset and uses a Mali-400MP4 GPU. The RAM capacity is double and users can opt for one of the three variants of internal memories: 16/32/64 GB (the first two are expandable up to 64GB). It runs on the Android v4.1.1 (Jelly Bean), but now it runs on v4.4.2 (KitKat). Also, there is a layer of TouchWiz UI on top of it.
For the battery and camera specs, the Sony Xperia C has a non removable Li-Ion 3000mAh battery which lasts around 24 hours when talking on 3G. The Samsung Galaxy Note II N7100 has a user replaceable Li-Ion 3100mAh battery that last up to 16 hours on 3G.
The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra sports a better rear camera of 13MP with features such as autofocus, LED flash, geo tagging, HDR, sweep panorama, face detection, touch focus and image stabilization. This phablet records videos at 1080p@30fps and with the 1.1MP front camera it can record at 720p@30fps.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100 has an 8MP back camera with similar features and it records simultaneous HD videos and images. The quality of the images is excellent even if they are taken in day sun light or in low light conditions. The secondary camera is 1.9MP.
The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra cost $361, while the Samsung Galaxy Note II N7100 costs $404.
