Miguel Cotto's next fight opponent may likely be Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, then Gennady Golovkin afterwards, according to trainer Freddie Roach. The famed boxing coach expressed his intent for his fighter to face Floyd Mayweather in a rematch instead.

Miguel Cotto's next fight is tentatively scheduled for December 6th, although an opponent has yet to be named. One of the names on the short list is former light middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who is coming off a victory against amateur boxing superstar Erislandy Lara.

However, a new name has emerged: Kazakh world champion Gennady Golovkin, who holds both the WBA and IBO 160-pound titles. But for Freddie Roach, Canelo Alvarez would be the top priority for Miguel Cotto's next fight, and a possible match-up with Gennady Golovkin afterwards.

"I want the Canelo Alvarez fight to happen," Roach told Boxingscene.com. "If that happens, we'll talk about Golovkin after that. We have no fear of him. He's hittable, he can punch a little bit."

"He's hittable and he doesn't have a great defense," he added. "He's a nice guy, a good fighter, real friendly guy and real polite. I met him a few times, he's a really nice gentleman. But boxing wise he's hittable and anyone who's like that I feel Miguel can hurt."

Roach, however, was skeptic about the venue for Miguel Cotto's next fight. New York City's Madison Square Garden is usually the venue for the Puerto Rican boxer's pay-per-view bouts, but the famed trainer believes that Canelo is not ready for a big venue like that.

"I don't think Canelo would love it," Roach said in an interview with Radio Raheem. "I don't think he's brave enough to go into the lion's den."

Freddie Roach also added that his fighter intends to face Floyd Mayweather once again, although no weight class was mentioned.

"There's one guy out there that he said he can knockout if he's in the kind of shape. Mayweather," Roach added. "There could be a rematch. He [Cotto] said 'Freddie, if I fought him if I was in this kind of shape you got me in, I would have knocked him out.'"
