Follow the steps at My Apple ID > Manage My Apple ID > sign in > Password And Security > click Get Started under Two-Step Verification. There's a prompt to send a four-digit verification code to a trusted device, to be used with the password on the next login or Apple Store purchase.

Note that the two-step verification only secures data if it comes with a strong password to begin with. In a blog post by ElcomSoft, a developer for password-cracking software, CEO Vladimir Katalov confirms,
