The Liverpool man limped out of the team's training session at St Jakob Park in Basel, where England will take on the Swiss in their opening European Qualifier on Monday evening.

Henderson appeared to turn his ankle but, according to reports, he was at least able to hobble off the pitch unaided after being assessed by Hodgson's medical staff.

Hodgson's options to replace Henderson, if necessary, are very limited with Manchester City's James Milner having joined Jack Wilshere in midfield for the rest of their practice game on Sunday.

Fabian Delph could come into consideration after making his senior England debut in the 1-0 win over Norway on Wednesday and Hodgson could move Phil Jones forward and make a further change at the back.

Hodgson is already without 15 senior players for the match in Switzerland, which is England's first competitive outing since their disappointing World Cup campaign.

In-form Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge was the latest man to withdraw from his squad on Friday due to a thigh injury.

Hodgson has not called up a replacement, so he will pick from captain Wayne Rooney, Rickie Lambert and Danny Welbeck in attack, with the latter likely to get the nod alongside Rooney.

The Football Association did not comment on the latest fitness concern involving Henderson.
