Along with the announcement that the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant to second royal child, the Prince of Wales' press release stated that Kate Middleton is suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum or acute morning sickness and that she is being treated by doctors at Kensington Palace.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, "Hyperemesis gravidarum is a condition characterized by severe nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and electrolyte disturbance. Mild cases are treated with dietary changes, rest and antacids. More severe cases often require a stay in the hospital so that the mother can receive fluid and nutrition through an intravenous line (IV)."

Pregnancy Statistics reported that "about 75 percent of all pregnant women experience the unfortunate side effects of morning sickness during the beginning of her pregnancy".

Pregnant women must know how to manage hyperemesis gravidarum: (acute morning sickness). Here are some suggestions from Better Health Channel:

  • Never take any medicine unless prescribed by your doctor, who knows of your pregnancy.
  • Before you get out of bed in the morning, you can consider eating plain sweet biscuits.
  • Eat small meals regularly; never leave your stomach empty as it causes nausea.
  • As much as you can, never make any unnecessary movements. Rest whenever possible.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink flat lemonade, diluted fruit juice, ginger tea, and others. If in case you can't take any of these, sucking on ice cubes may do.
  • Think about acupressure or acupuncture on the wrist.
  • Vitamin B6 supplements may help but doses more than 200 mg a day can be risky. Talk to your doctor about this. Never take anything without proper consultation.
  • If you are the cook at home, get help from your family members as you should not do this with your condition.
  • Do not wear clothes that will tighten your abdomen.

Again, it is best to consult everything with your doctor if you have hyperemesis gravidarum or acute morning sickness.
