First of all, the simmering tension between Mapleton residents and the cult group the Guilty Remnant finally exploded as the two came to blows. In The Leftovers Series Finale, we witnessed the killing of Gladys (Marceline Hugot) via stoning. We were introduced to a brand new character, Garvey Sr., played by Scott Glenn, and his National Geographic magazine. This of course is a nod to the strange dream sequence that Garvey (Justin Theroux) had.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , director Mimi Leder discusses the final episode of season 1, which raised as many questions as it answered. The director said that, "you [as a viewer] just have to read into it yourself what you bring to it." As for the show's themes, The Leftovers series season finale rings with some of the things that the previous episodes have been showing. "I think there's a common thread of anger, despair, grief, loss, -- of, 'is there hope for humanity'?" Leder shares.
For the director, the most difficult scene to shoot in the series finale was the burning of the Guilty Remnant's houses. "It was an intense difficult scene to shoot. We're not an action show, so my approach to it was to try to get into the head of Kevin Garvey -- to follow him on this journey of seeing what has happened to his town, seeing it through his eyes. He's discovering that the Guilty Remnant has done the unthinkable, has made them remember, after he's gone through quite a confession himself."
Though the show has been praised by many for its treatment of despair, but also been panned by some, because of its bleakness and dreariness. In the case of The Leftovers season 1 finale, many have found this particular episode satisfying. In any case, HBO has greenlighted the show's second season, so watch out for more answers to the questions still lingering in the show.
