After deciding that nothing creative could be added to the story anymore, Matt Damon's 'The Bourne Identity' character as Jason Bourne was shelved. Universal Pictures then casted Jeremy Renner for a spinoff to the spy thriller, 'The Bourne Legacy,' instead.
According to Deadline, however, Matt Damon could possibly come back for one more movie as Jason Bourne. Universal is reportedly in talks with both Damon and director Paul Greengrass to once again team up for a continuation in the series.
Matt Damon has already appeared in the first three Bourne films, 'The Bourne Identity' (2002), 'The Bourne Supremacy' (2004) and 'The Bourne Ultimatum' (2007), with Greengrass directing the last two films. 'Ultimatum' became a huge commercial and critical hit, earning three Academy Awards in 2007.
The Bourne series is adapted from New York Times bestselling author Robert Ludlum's spy thriller novels. It follows the life of a CIA assassin suffering from an extreme memory loss, who is then put into danger as he tries to remember his past life.
The possibility of Matt Damon's 'The Bourne Identity' character returning came as a shock to most fans.
Greengrass, according Deadline, previously declared that any creative plans for the character would be stumped after Jason regains his memories. He argued that the appeal of the franchise centred around Jason's desperation to find out who he really was.
The pair however, has reportedly changed their minds, setting the film for a summer 2016 release.
A fifth Bourne movie has already been scheduled for July 16, 2016 with Jeremy Renner returning as Aaron Cross and 'True Detective' director Justin Lin as helmer. Rumor has it though, that this follow up to the Bourne spinoff will be delayed in favour of Matt Damon's 'The Bourne Identity' return.
Which one are you most looking forward to-Matt Damon coming back as Jason Bourne or Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross?
