George Clooney to make a cameo on the upcoming season of Downton Abbey? We wish! That would have been a Downton Abbey season 5 spoiler for the ages. While it appears that the Monuments Men star won't be appearing in the beloved ITV series about the aristocratic Crawley family and their household, he is filming a Downton Abbey special. The actor visited Highclere Castle (where Downton Abbey shoots) for a special guest appearance at a Downton Abbey sketch for the Text Santa charity telethon, scheduled to be shown in the United Kingdom this Christmas season.
The sketch has been confirmed by an ITV representative according to The Telegraph, and at first not many details were known about the actor's special Downton Abbey sketch, but now we have finally learned some exciting details unlike Downton Abbey season 5 spoilers which are getting harder and harder to come by.
The details come by way of Tom Cullen, who we know in the show as Lord Gillingham, one of Lady Mary's most ardent suitors. The actor appeared on the UK talk show Lorraine, and of course he was asked about the upcoming George Clooney sketch. While he revealed that he himself wasn't actually there for the filming, he said that the Dowager Countess played by Maggie Smith was there for the filming. Not only that, but the dashing Ocean's 11 actor offered Maggie Smith a kiss.
Additional information comes by way of The Guardian, which reports that George Clooney will be appearing in the special sketch with Hugh Bonneville (Lord Crawley) and Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), and that Clooney's role will be "an American who is a guest at a wedding in the country estate."
For this exciting cameo which is as anticipated as the Downton Abbey season 5 spoilers, we actually have Hugh Bonneville to thank. Clooney directed Bonneville in The Monuments Men and the two have developed a close friendship that led to this collaboration.
