The United Nations has appointed Academy Award nominated actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, as a UN climate ambassador.
"Mr. DiCaprio is a credible voice in the environmental movement, and has a considerable platform to amplify its message," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said regarding the designation.
Mr. Ban continued, "I am pleased he has chosen to add his voice to UN efforts to raise awareness of the urgency and benefits of acting now to combat climate change."
He earned the position because of his unwavering commitment to the cause. He helped fund different environmental protection and preservation projects through the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which he created in 1998.
The foundation aims to preserve the world's wildlife and promote a harmonious relationship between mankind and nature.
According to the UN, the acclaimed actor has helped raise funds and promote awareness for the organization's three major concerns, including "protecting biodiversity, ocean and forest conservation, and climate change."
Leonardo DiCaprio, as a UN climate ambassador, promises to exert more effort into the organizations major focuses.
"It's an honor to accept the role of UN Messenger of Peace on Climate Change and to support the Secretary General in his efforts to address one of the most important issues we face as a global community," DiCaprio reportedly said as he accepted the post.
He added, "I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history - it is a moment for action. How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet."
The 'Wolf Of Wall Street' star has been invited to the UN Climate Summit on September 23. Leaders key people from the different governments and business as well as representatives from the financial and civil sectors will gather and to discuss important environmental issues.
Designated as UN Messenger of Peace (with a special focus on climate change), he will join 11 other appointees, as well as one Goodwill Ambassador to the event.
Two days before the Summit, the Clinton Foundation will honor the 'Shutter Island' actor's longstanding activism for environmental preservation.
