Jon Jones' next fight was postponed due to injury, which teammate Alistair Overeem owned up to and apologized for. "The Reem" also stated his claim that he was telling the truth, despite Dana White's accusations of it being otherwise.
Jon Jones next' fight against Daniel Cormier was originally scheduled for UFC 178 on September 28th, but was rescheduled for UFC 182 on January 3, 2015. Initial reports reveal that the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion was injured during training, while he was doing wrestling drills with teammate Alistair Overeem.
Greg Jackson, trainer of both "Bones" and "The Reem", spoke about the postponement of Jon Jones' next fight, in an interview with Sherdog.com in mid-August.
"It's part of the game, it wasn't like somebody went for a flying kick and dislocated [something]," Jackson said. "Somebody went for a takedown, [Jones] stepped the wrong way, twisted the wrong way and down he went."
"He was fighting it, and he just twisted it. And then it just popped," he continued. "Alistair's maybe 240, Jon's 220. It's not like he was working with a giant moose. It was just one of those things."
Overeem already released a previous statement, claiming that the incident was merely a "freak accident."
"Accidents happen. There's no fault to blame," Overeem said in a separate interview with MMA Junkie. "What is he doing training with me? We're in the same gym. We're teammates. We have lunch (together) and we drive around together."
"The Reem" once again spoke about the incident in his most recent appearance at The MMA Hour. This time, he expressed his regret about what happened.
"And I felt terrible man, because I was looking forward to that fight. Of course obviously [Jones]'s had a great career, he's a great athlete, but I also like him as a friend," Overeem said. "So, you never want to do that to your buddies that are your teammates, because you feel terrible."
In a report by MMA Fighting, UFC President Dana White questioned Overeem's training sessions with Jones, as the former had a significant weight advantage. But the heavyweight contender maintained that he did nothing wrong.
"It was the truth, so what are you going to do?" Overeem continued. "Anybody can say the truth. It is what it is. You cannot make it any more nice, right? If somebody asks anybody in the gym what happened, 'hey what happened with Jon,' 'yeah he was warming up with Alistair'...I mean, should they lie about it or something? It was the truth."
