The franchise movies as of late are big box office earners, and sequels, prequels, and final installments only serve to bring in more money for the hottest titles in Hollywood. Now, the success of the Maze Runner has secured a Maze Runner 2 movie. And the sequel is dropping on us much sooner than anticipated.
Fox Pictures has confirmed a Maze Runner 2 release date for September 18, 2015, one year from now! The Maze Runner 2 movie's official title is Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, and it is the second installment of the movie versions based on the books by James Dashner, a young adult post-apocalyptic science fiction tale.
It is part of a trilogy: The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure are the two books that follow. A prequel to the Maze Runner was also been released in 2014, The Kill Order.
This news comes in the wake of the big box office earnings of The Maze Runner movie which is out now, as it topped the weekend box office with a staggering $ 32.5 million. In the overseas box office, it has earned a whopping $ 37.6 million as well.
The Maze Runner's story is about Thomas, played by Dylan O'Brien (Teen Wolf), who wakes up in The Glade completely unaware of who he is, what happened to him, and how he ends up there.
With the help the other boys he finds in The Glade, he discovers a maze with terrifying secrets. Game of Thrones' Thomas Brodie-Sangster deliver his ominous warning to Thomas "No one has ever survived a night in the maze," Brodie-Sangster says. They have to fight off evil creatures called the Grievers, and a mysterious girl who makes an appearance seems to be the key to their victory.
The Maze Runner is still out in theaters right now, and it co-stars Kay Scodelario, Ki Hong Lee, Aml Ameen, Blake Cooper and Will Poulter.
