It was a Korean movie that was so successful that it transitioned well into other countries. It was even remade into a Hollywood movie starring Elisha Cuthbert (Girl Next Door) and Jesse Bradford (Flags Of Our Fathers). Now it has been confirmed that the Korean romantic comedy hit will have a follow-up!
According to Variety, the My Sassy Girl sequel has been greenlighted and it will be a project that will be developed by the team-up of Korea's Shinchine and Beijing Sky Wheel Media of China. This will mark the first collaboration between the two countries -- a fruit of an agreement between the two governments of China and Korea that was signed last July. This will be the first movie to be launched internationally by Shincine, a giant in the Korean film industry especially in the 1980s to the early 1990s. The My Sassy Girl sequel will be a comeback of sorts for the production company.
It will be recalled that the original My Sassy Girl was a huge hit in Asia, and made a star out of Jun Ji-hyun, whose international name is Gianna Jun. While Gianna Jun will not be in the sequel, the original male lead Cha Tae-hyun. The love interest this time around will be portrayed by Victoria, who is Chinese and is a member of the popular Korean girl group f(x). The plot of the My Sassy Girl sequel, newly named My New Sassy Girl, follows Victoria who went to grade school with Cha Tae-hyun. Victoria's character is bullied because of her strange Chinese accent, but the two later on become husband and wife. The My Sassy Girl sequel will follow their early married years together.
Shincine is aiming to release the My Sassy Girls sequel in both China and Korea next year in May.
