For this "How to Get Away with Murder" TV review, the opinions vary following the premiere episode which only proved that it can draw in audience after generating 14 million viewers. But did the pilot show just enough to keep viewers' attention?
Brandon Ambrosino of Vox.com said in his "How to Get Away with Murder" TV review that the show started off well being "as close to a guaranteed hit" compared to any show, "and last night's pilot didn't disappoint."
"It's too early to predict whether 'Black-ish' and 'How to Get Away With Murder' have the staying power to draw audiences back on a weekly basis. But for now, it's worth noting that prioritizing diversity in entertainment seems to have paid off for ABC," he wrote.
However, David Hinckley in his "How to Get Away With Murder" TV review for NY Daily News, wrote that unlike other Shonda Rhimes' shows "Scandal" and "Grey's Anatomy," the new series starring Viola Davis "doesn't serve up enough juicy soapy fun."
"Or perhaps more accurately, it doesn't offer enough fun to balance out the multiple improbabilities in its storyline, the constant time-shifts, the hard-to-follow scenes in the dark or what we're expected to accept about the legal and academic worlds," he added.
But he conceded that even if the pilot episode provided "insufficient evidence" to declare it a runaway winner, "Rhimes fans may stick around for this third hour of Shonda."
Nevertheless, Variety said that "How to Get Away With Murder" killed in at Thursday's ratings after generating 3.8 rating in the adults 18-49 or 14 millions viewers, which matched the "Scandal" ratings.
"The Viola Davis-fronted 'Murder' performed nearly 10% better in 18-49 than last year's second hour of the 'Grey's Anatomy' season opener, which aired on the Thursday of premiere week, and it also exceeded the 'Scandal' season premiere in Week 2 of last season," it said.
