The Inherent Vice movie is based on the book by American novelist Thomas Pynchon, who is regarded as a recluse who has jealously guarded his privacy over the years. The novel, which bears the same name, is set in the 1970s and follows a main character called Doc Sportello (in the movie, he is played by Joaquin Phoenix ). Sportello is a drug addled private investigator who is investigating a case involving his ex girlfriend. The ex girlfriend, played by Katherine Waterston suspects that the ex wife of her filthy rich boyfriend is plotting to have him thrown into a mental institution. The plot, as in all of Thomas Pynchon's novels is thick and complicated, and before long we are introduced to a whole of characters and plot lines.
