David Byrne will be sharing the life of one the Philippines former first ladies, Imelda Marcos, in an upcoming disco musical.
"I tell my friends it's a disco musical. Although that's not 100% accurate, it tells them that it's not an ordinary theater piece," Byrne told BBC.
The former Talking Heads front man is currently in London for the opening of "Here Lies Love," a production that follows the rise and fall of the former first lady.
"Here Lies Love" was previously staged in New York City and Byrne is encouraging attendees to wear their most comfortable clothing and footwear so they could join in the dancing.
"The ones on the floor are on their feet the whole time. But they don't have to dance the whole time," Byrne explained.
Byrne also dished on what inspired him to write a musical that told the life of Marcos.
"She was someone I knew about. I was old enough to know about her as a personality. I knew that she was given to pithy, sometimes outrageous statements and behavior - sometimes, amusing sometimes horrific. That alone wasn't enough. Then I read that she had a disco ball installed in her New York town house."
"She loved going to discos at that time. She even had the roof of the palace in Manila turned into a disco of sorts. I thought, 'Wow! She surrounds herself with music - particular genre of music I feel comfortable with.' I wondered if there was a story there that could be told in that musical language."
After a year of doing extensive research, Byrne was finally able to put together a masterpiece which he co-wrote alongside Fatboy Slim, the Independent reported.
When asked why he chose to write about Marcos and not any other high-profile personality, Byrne explained, "Why her rather than some other world figure? Why not Henry Kissinger? Well, he doesn't come with music. The great statements that he makes are deeply political, and for her it's all very personal."
