One of the best thrillers showing right now is the David Fincher and Ben Affleck adaptation of the bestselling novel by author Gillian Flynn. The Gone Girl film has opened to rave reviews, with the director's signature excellent filmmaking. Reviews have gone been surfacing, calling the film one of Fincher's best yet. Reviews say Fincher was able to deftly tell the story of the murder mystery, while showing the complexities of the relationship of a married couple. It also helped that there were excellent performances by its lead stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.

But the big question on plenty of people's minds is whether the Gone Girl film is actually faithful to the bestselling novel? And if so, how was it able to do that given the overlapping narratives and the non-linear timeline that the book followed? One of the biggest issues surrounding the Gone Girl film when it was still in production was that the entire ending of the movie drastically differed from that of the book, causing some fans to raise an uproar.

If you have not seen the film and would like to be kept in suspense as to how the book handled the story, it would be best to stop reading now as the differences of the Gone Girl film and the book will be discussed in detail here.

For the most part, the movie stayed faithful to the book, but there are some differences. First, on the morning of Amy's disappearance, the character of Ben Affleck, Nick Dunne does go to the beach as was his alibi to the police. In the book, Nick spends time reading old articles of his that were published in the magazine he used to work for.

Plot details in the book where Nick and Amy's dad make their investigation in an abandoned mall were also changed. In the Gone Girl film, this investigation is instead conducted by the two detectives who were assigned to the case, Gilpin and Boney.

Also there are characters from the book that never make it to the movie, such as the mother of Desi Collings. Desi, played by Neil Patrick Harris in the movie is Amy's obsessive ex boyfriend. We also do not see Tanner Bolt's wife who is a very interesting character in the book.
