Canelo Alvarez's next fight has been postponed as the former 154-pound champion pulled out of his December 6th bout. His promoter Oscar De La Hoya, on the other hand, believes that 2015 will be a "huge year" for his fighter.
Canelo Alvarez's next fight was originally scheduled against former IBF welterweight champion Joshua "The Grandmaster" Clottey in Houston, Texas. However, Canelo was forced to pull out of the fight due to an ankle problem he had been ailing from for a while now.
Speaking exclusively to Yahoo! Sports, the fighter's promoter and head honcho of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya detailed the current situation of Alvarez.
"It bothers him so much when he runs, or when he's up on his toes and hitting the bag," De La Hoya explained. "I think it's like a muscle strain in his ankle, is what you might call it."
Canelo Alvarez's next fight is one of the first bouts to be made under the highly publicized end of the "cold war" between Golden Boy and rival Top Rank Promotions of veteran promoter Bob Arum.
In a recent interview with USA Today, De La Hoya once again opened up the possibility of Alvarez facing one of Arum's top fighters, current WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.
For "The Golden Boy", the would-be scenario of the Cotto-Canelo match-up can only mean great things for the sport of boxing.
"When Cotto-Canelo gets made, I see no reason why it can't come close to the two million mark in pay-per-view buys," De La Hoya claimed. "Yes, you have to give credit to Miguel Cotto, he's a great fighter. But you bring in the Canelo factor and it brings pay-per-view fights to a whole new level."
After the cancellation of Canelo Alvarez's next fight, De La Hoya no longer brought up the aforementioned bout, but did promise a momentous year for his fighter in 2015.
"He'd rather take care of it now because 2015 is going to be a huge year for him," De La Hoya added. "I believe Canelo is going straight to a major fight next year and so he wants to get this taken care of and put it behind him."
