In the same interview, the comedian-actress also clarifies :"What I really mean by that is I'm an American. That's what I really mean. I have darker skin. I have a nice, interesting grade of hair. I connect with Caucasian. I connect with Asian. I connect with Black. I connect with Indian. I connect with each culture."
As per MTV's report, the statement of Symone "I'm not African American - I'm American" got backlash from online users last Wednesday, October 8.
Based on Grio report about an exclusive statement from the former Disney star, she addresses clarification to respond over the criticism she's receiving "I never said I wasn't black ... I want to make that very clear. I said, I am not African-American. I never expected my personal beliefs and comments to spark such emotion in people. I think it is only positive when we can openly discuss race and being labeled in America." Meanwhile, here are the reactions of the netizens:
But.... Raven is still Black. New Black, to be sure based on her comments, but Black nonetheless. This "colorless" stuff is hot steamy crap. — April (@ReignOfApril) October 6, 2014
Raven Symone has been the face of black families all her life and now she don't wanna be labeled?

I've always loved Raven Symone but when she speaks on situations like sexuality and race, she comes off as very ignorant. — Chels. ✨ (@ChronicBratface) October 6, 2014
For ONCE I want these New Blacks to keep it funky. Just say "I'm too rich to be bothered with being saddled with blackness," Raven Symone.
