Which smartphone is the better choice for consumers? We pit the Sony Xperia M2 against the HTC Desire 700 to see which device is worth the purchase.

For the design and display, both smartphones have screens with a resolution of 540x960 pixels however, the HTC Desire 700 has a display sized at 5 inches, which supports a pixel density of 220ppi and has a layer of HTC Sense 5.0 on top. It weighs 149 grams and its dimensions are 145.5x72x10.3mm.

The Sony Xperia M2 is only 1 gram lighter than its rival, while it measures 139.7×71.1×8.6 mm. Its 4.8 inches TFT qHD display supports 229ppi and it’s protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 against scratches. Also, it supports multi touch up to four fingers.

In terms of hardware and OS, these smartphones are equipped with the same quad core 1.2GHz Cortex A7 processors, but they’re supported by different chipsets. The HTC Desire 700 has a Spreadtrum Shark chipset teaming up with a Mali-400 GPU, while the Sony Xperia M2 has two variants of chipsets: Qualcomm MSM8926 Snapdragon 400 and Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400, and uses an Adreno 305 GPU.

They also have 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, but the maxim capacity supported by adding a microSD card is 64GB in the case of HTC Desire 700, while the Sony Xperia M2 allows expansion only up to 32GB. In addition, both smartphones come with compass, accelerometer and proximity sensors.

The Android versions these smartphones come with are 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) for HTC device and 4.3 (Jelly Bean), which will be upgraded to 4.4.2 (KitKat) for the Sony device.

For the battery and camera specs, the HTC Desire 700 has a Li-Po battery with the capacity of 2100mAh, which allows a talk time on 3G of 11 hours and 40 minutes. The Sony Xperia M2 has a non-removable Li-Ion 2300mAh battery which lasts 14 hours and a half when talking only on 3G.

Both smartphones have rear cameras of 8MP with autofocus, LED flash, touch focus, HDR etc. However, there are some features which are specific to each phone and the secondary camera on HTC handset is better, because of its 2.1MP, while its Sony device has a VGA front camera.

The Sony Xperia M2 cost $312 dollars, while the HTC Desire 700 is $300 more expensive than its rival.
