Swiss professional tennis player, Roger Federer beat Leonardo Mayer by saving five match points and rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the third-set tiebreaker. The results of the match shows 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7) in the second-round match at the Shanghai Masters.
On the other hand, Rafael Nadal lost to fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 7-6 (6). Nadal recently found out that he had appendicitis but decided to forego surgery for the mean time and relied on antibiotics to continue playing at the Shanghai Masters.
This is the first match for Federer since helping the Swiss team beat Italy in the Davis Cup. He said "'I think I got unbelievably lucky today. Let's be quite honest. I think he deserved it. Could be my greatest escape thus far."
Federer explains his reason for the difficulty as "Midway through the third set I was like, yeah, I have been on vacation actually, so it's normal that I'm struggling. I was trying to go for an all-time record of missed volleys tonight."
With regards to Nadal, his appendicitis has been keeping him from performing at his best in the games. He was unable to sleep well, eat well or even get out of bed for many days.
During the match, Nadal said that he is not in great pain but is dizzy with the antibiotics. He said "Even today the doctors told me that I was very, very lucky that I did not have to go for surgery straight, can (treat) with antibiotics. Pain I think is under control. That's important. I think I was lucky for that."
But he is also not taking risk on his health as he will make arrangements with his doctor once he gets back to Spain to further study whether he would need to have his appendix removed.
He said "My answer today honestly is I'm going to do it after the World Tour Finals. You never know. Depends how the things improve. When you are on the bed for three days, the only thing you want to do is feel better, feel healthy again, and that's it."
