A judge sentenced the mother of an autistic Michigan teenager to 10-22 years in prison for a reported failed murder-suicide attempt, according to Yahoo News.
The mother, Kelli Rai Stapleton, reportedly thought it best that she and her daughter "went to heaven" after years of suffering violent attacks by her child and failure to find affordable treatment after her family's insurance company stopping paying for a treatment program and local officials changed her daughter's education plan, according to the Associated Press.
The 46-year-old reportedly pleaded guilty last month to first-degree child abuse in a bargain with prosecutors who dismissed an attempted murder charge. Stapleton reportedly admitted to driving her daughter Isabelle to a remote spot in Michigan in September 2013, giving her a sleep-inducing drug and placing two charcoal-burning grills inside their van.
Although both mother and daughter survived, Isabelle, who is now 15, was in a coma for four days and suffered brain damage, according to ABC News.
Stapleton's attorney reportedly requested probation and community service, but Stapleton asked Judge James Batzer for a 15-year sentence.
"One year for every year of (Isabelle's) life that I tried to take," stated Stapleton.
She continued, "I will spend each moment of each day in anguish for my actions and gratitude for the miracle that brought Issy back. She is not a monster. I am, I always have and will always love her beyond measure."
Stapleton became well known in her community as an advocate for autism awareness and worked to blog about the challenges of finding proper help for her daughter.
Defense attorney Heidi Hodek read out a letter from Stapleton's husband, Matthew, written on behalf of him and his children.
"We know and understand in our hearts that she needs help, not an extended amount of jail time," the letter read.
