Which Sony smartphone is the ideal purchase for consumers? We compare the Xperia Z1 Compact and the Xperia Z2 to see which device is the better buy.

For the design and display, the Xperia Z1 Compact has a 4.3 inch display and this drastically contributes to its reduction in size. It is not hugely different from the Xperia Z1, in terms of features, like thickness, but the use of this smaller display makes a huge difference in the overall dimensions.

The Xperia Z2 comes with a 5.2 inch display that has full HD resolution. Resolution is compromised on its predecessor since it comes with only a 720p display. Owing to the small size, this resolution will be more than enough, to handle high-quality content.

For the hardware and memory, the Xperia Z2 is equipped with a Qualcomm snapdragon processor that is clocked at 2.3 GHz. This quad core unit is the latest in the 801 range.

The Xperia Z1 Compact uses the older 800 version of snapdragon processors. The quad core units are also clocked at a slightly lower 2.2 GHz. Both smartphones are supported by the same graphics processing unit, Adreno 330.

The content is accessed from the internal memory or external memory on both units. Internal memory will be a standard 16 GB on both devices but, the memory card support extends to 128 GB in the case of the Xperia Z2 and 64 GB with regard to the Xperia Z1 Compact. Given the ever-decreasing prices of memory cards, it would not be surprising to see the device feature large amount of content.

For battery life, the Xperia Z2 has a very large 3200 mAh battery, which remains as one of the best performing devices in battery tests. The Xperia Z1 Compact uses a 2300 mAh battery, but it should be sufficient, given its smaller screen size.

The Xperia Z1 Compact is available for around $420 while the Xperia Z2 cost $600.
