Finally, "The Dark Crystal" movie's sequel has been greenlighted, and as of this writing production is underway. Before this great news broke online, however, Jim Henson's hit fantasy-cult classic's follow-up has been shelved twice.
AMC Theaters confirmed this news two years ago (2012) when "The Dark Crystal" movie was shelved for the second time. The film, which has gone through differing stages within a six-year period, was cancelled, not just once but twice. Financial issues were at the core of the cancellations with Omnilab Media backing out on the project.
Back then, Peter and Michael Spierig were collaborating with the Jim Henson Company to bring the sequel to life on screen using a combination of puppetry, 3D technology and computer graphic images (CGI).
After the cancellation, the film retreated to oblivion for a couple of years, and only resurfaced recently as one of the three Jim Henson classics to make a big screen comeback, along with "Labyrinth" and "Fraggle Rock," reported The Independent.
"The Dark Crystal" movie made waves in 1982 (IMDB) and went on to become one of the most well-loved fantasy adventure flick made by Jim Henson and his company. Because Henson had long since passed away in 1990, his people would take charge in his place with the project slated to become part of the "The Jim Henson Co.'s" legacy project.
According to Independent.IE, the movie follows the story of Jen, a Gelfling. He was on a quest to find the missing crystal shard and restore it to its place lest the balance of the world gets disrupted, which leads to the prevalence of evil.
AMC Theaters reported that the title of the film in 2012 before its cancellation was "The Power of the Dark Crystal." Will the producers use the same title for the sequel?
That is something fans would find out when once the creators have released the movie trailer and its official date of showing.
