Australia hand coach Lehmann contract extension

Australia coach Darren Lehmann has been handed an extension by Cricket Australia and will remain as the team's coach.

CA's performance manager Pat Howard says Lehmann's influence on the team had been immense since assuming the position in June 2013.

He said "We have been extremely pleased with the results Darren has achieved with the team since he came on board."

He adds "He has helped create an excellent team environment that has seen players thrive. We want that to continue so we used the winter period to work through an extension to his current contract. Importantly it provides continuity for the team and certainty for Darren heading into a critical period for Australian cricket."

Lehmann replaced Mickey Arthur as the coach of the Australian cricket team, only two weeks before the 2013 Ashes series.

He was the coach of the Deccan Chargers, an IPL team from 2009 to 2012 and currently is the coach of Kings XI Punjab IPL team. He coached Queensland during the 2010/11 KFC Twenty20 Big Bash in place of Trevor Barsby, who had resigned. In June 2013

According to Lehmann "I want to continue with the work we have done on and off the field with the team, as I feel we are heading in the right direction. I will be judged by results. If the team is not performing, then I am answerable."

He adds "have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have had in the job and am proud of what we have achieved so far."

"I'm grateful that the board has shown faith in me to continue in the job."

"In the meantime, I am looking forward to this current test series against Pakistan then getting stuck in as we lead into the biggest summer of cricket Australia has seen in a long time."

Lehmann was known for his batting technique as it was quite unconventional; taking guard outside leg stump, and, just before a ball was bowled, stepping back and across toward and sometimes past off stump. This peculiar technique meant that if the ball was short in pitch, he did not need to step back any further.
