'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2' Will Still Be Released Simultaneously In Theaters And On Netflix; Will Video On Demand Change The Traditional Way Of Watching Mainstream Films?

It stirred up controversy when Weinstein Company has officially announced that "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2: The Green Legend" will be released at the same time on Netflix.

IMAX operator giants are against this. Regal, one of the largest theater chain, owning 86 IMAX worldwide, expresses disapproval of the said decision of Weinstein Company.

Theater chains such as Cinemark and Carmike have also planned to boycott the film, based on reports on Hollywood Reporter.

AMC won't also show support to the new approach in releasing mainstream film such as the sequel to Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".

In a joint statement with its Chinese parent company Wanda via Variety, AMC said, "No one has approached us to license this made-for-video sequel in the U.S. or China, so one must assume the screens IMAX committed are in science centers and aquariums."

However, Netflix seems unmoved with this plan of theater chains to boycott the theaterical release of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2" as it just recently secured exclusive rights to four films starring Adam Sandler, as posted on Netflix website.

In reaction to the move by Weinstein, WWSP-90FM production director, and Netflix users for 6 years, Harrison Meyer says as published on The Pointer, "I find it both exciting yet worrying that this sort of release could set a trend for future movie releases. On one hand, this gives lesser known movies, maybe independent films, a better way of accessing moviegoers who have trouble seeing them upon release. The closest location these films are shown is two hours away from Point, so I can attest to the frustration."

He also added that he has "hard time believing that a sequel to 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' would be better watched on a home television or laptop rather than the silver screen, so there is the possibility that consumers won't get that full experience while streaming."
