Tensions between North and South Korea have been on the rise after several exchanges regarding the border, according to AFP.
After the most recent exchange of small arms fire on Sunday after South Korean troops reportedly fired warning shots at a North Korean patrol moving towards the border, the North Korea's military warned through a border hotline that it would take "unpredictable measures" to retaliate against alleged provocations, stated South Korea's defense ministry.
South Korea responded to the message "expressing regret" and warning North Korea against further provocations, stated a ministry spokesman.
"Our side clarified our position that we will sternly deal with further provocations by North Korea," stated the spokesman.
Although no injuries were reported in the recent incident, shots were reportedly exchanged for approximately 10 minutes.
On October 10, North Korean troops reportedly fired at balloons being released across the border from South Korea, leading to the South returning fire, according to BBC News. Activists in South Korea reportedly float balloons carrying leaflets condemning North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over the border.
Although the North has repeatedly urged South Korea to ban the leaflet launches, officials have reportedly insisted that there are no legal grounds for doing so.
There was another exchange of warning shots after a North Korean patrol boat crossed a maritime border, according to South Korea.
Although a meeting was held last week between the two Koreas to address the continuing border tensions, they reportedly came to no agreement. South Korea has proposed October 30 as a date for restarting the dialogue while unification ministry spokesman Lim Byeong-Cheol reportedly stated that he believes the conversation will be had.
