Apple iOS 8.1 Update Released Monday, With Fixes And New Features; Serious Storage Requirements Remain For Over-The-Air Installs; Adoption Rate On The Decline For iOS Users

Apple iOS 8.1 update released last Monday with fixes, but a serious issue remain unresolved, according to reports.

Apple releases an update to its iOS 8 with the iOS 8.1 fix. Monday's release intends to solve issues since the new iOS's release September 17.

The update offered a few new features for Apple users, notably Apple Pay for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It also came with iCloud Photo Library and a revived Camera Roll. One of the bug fixes users expected didn't flesh out, though.

Many users still hesitate the jump from iOS 7 because of the unreasonable storage requirement for the iOS 8 install. Devices compatible for the iOS 8 install are required to free serious storage space just to accommodate the new iOS.

The iOS 8.1 fix is expected to lower the storage requirements for the install, but Monday's release disappointed.

The storage requirements vary between devices, though the official download size for the updates are considerably minimal; 70MB for an iPhone 4S, 126MB for the iPhone 6, 140MB for the iPad Air, and notably, 999MB for the iPhone 5.

A jump from iOS 7 to the iOS 8.1 update requires serious storage space, though. On the iPhone 5, an iOS 8.1 update OTA (over-the-air) requires users to clear a massive 4.8GB of storage space.

Apple reports the decline in users who adopt the new iOS, and the trend will likely continue if the iOS 8.1 update issue isn't sorted out. The update is supposed to fix the install requirements as priority.

Though the issue isn't a dead end, as users have the option to update via iTunes in order to bypass the storage requirement, many iOS users may be unaware of the alternative, considering OTA installation the only available (or best) option (bgr.com).

The iOS 8.1 update released Monday, with Continuity features for multiple Apple devices in place (forbes.com).
