After battling a deadly epidemic in the third episode, Russell and the rest of his team took on witchcraft and chemistry in "CSI: Las Vegas" season 15 episode 4.
The crime of the week took a slightly supernatural turn with a secret coven making banishment spells and a rogue "witch" sacrificing the high school quarterback to cure his son from cancer.
The victim, Chemistry teacher Chet Messner, comes out of his classroom in flames in the middle of straight-A student Mason's video diary one school day. 911 is called and the CSI team takes over the scene.
They soon discover that Mr. Messner didn't burn to death and instead was poisoned with cyanide. They find out, later on, that he got it from a test sheet laced with the deadly poison in his office. The team also discovers that the upstanding Chemistry teacher was actually a member of a secret coven involving several other teachers in the high school.
The members of the secret society are discovered one by one - the principal, Mason's mother, as well as the school janitor, Ed. They admitted to doing a banishing spell for Messner but not to killing the teacher.
In the course of the investigation, they learn that Messner has been injecting athletes of the school up with steroids for extra cash, including the quarterback and a member of the swim team (guest starring Bella Thorne). They peg Rob the quarterback as the initial suspect but when he turns up dead, they had to look into the witch coven.
After some more investigation, the team figures out that it was actually Mason's mother, Rebecca, who killed Rob and accidentally poisoned Messner. She had to kill Rob for a healing spell that could save Mason from cancer.
Left homeless and parentless, Mason is taken in by Hannah, the swim team member and his next-door neighbour.
The Gig Harbor twins, which was a running arc for this season, wasn't looked into again in this episode of 'CSI: Las Vegas' season 15. However, previous reports suggested that the storyline will be visited again in episode six.
