'Pacific Rim 2' Plot A Buildup To A Trilogy, An Ongoing Series? Director Guillermo Del Toro Reveals Plans For The Film; Character Rumors Abound With First Draft Of Script Finished

The "Pacific Rim 2" plot is a buildup to a third installment, which may continue as a film series.

Director Guillermo del Toro offers insight on the "Pacific Rim 2" plot, hinting a tie-in to a trilogy, even to an ongoing film franchise.

It's evident the inter-dimensional breach supposedly sealed in the first Pacific Rim still has cracks to exploit, as director Guillermo del Toro develops the plot to the film's sequel. Del Toro currently collaborates with screenwriter Zak Penn on the follow-up, and in an interview, updates on details for the sequel, as well as on yet another installment.

Del Toro has confirmed a trilogy following the "Pacific Rim 2" release date, but also suggests an ongoing franchise is possible.

"The direction we're going in is very different from the first. All I can say is some of your favorite characters come back, some others don't because we have decided that we're going to shoot ambitiously and say 'Let's hope we have three movies,''so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one. I hope people like it but you're gonna get a very different experience from the first one."

It's worth noting that Del Toro was also the go-to man for Hellboy 3, an expected film which unfortunately never really fleshed out. The director's plans on the sequel should appease worries of "Pacific Rim 3" not seeing the light of day, though. On the offhand, the rumored plot for the sequel includes Newt the scientist returning as the villain.

"We got the first draft of the movie now, and we are going to spend another 4-5 months on the screenplay before we start pre-production. We start pre-production next year in August-September and start shooting November-December next year."

The "Pacific Rim 2" release date is pegged April 7, 2017, from Legendary Pictures (superherohype.com).
