LG3 Samsung S3 Neo, Ebola Virus Outbreak 2014 West Africa News Update: LG, Samsung Donate Smartphones To Fight Epidemic In West Africa As Infections Spread In U.S., Europe. According to news reports, UN health workers among others will receive 2000 LG handsets from the South Korean phone maker. The phones are reportedly U.S. variants of the popular iPhone killer LG G3, and they will be used to fight Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa.
Bluekomm noted, "The smartphones will be donated to provide healthcare and other key personnel dispatched by the UN in heavily affected areas. The smartphones are being donated to help with effortless, seamless and fast communication between teams in the field."
The donation from LG comes after a move by Samsung to contribute to the effort in West Africa. The leading smartphone maker and competitor to the iPhone 6 has said it will donate 3,000 Galaxy S3 Neo phones in the battle against Ebola virus outbreak.
Reports say that the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) will manage distribution of the phones. The 3,000 Galaxy S3 Neo smartphones will be sent to Ebola clinics, 60 of them spread across Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
Choong-hak Lee, senior VP and LG's corporate social responsibility efforts chief, said in a statement,"We hope that our contribution will make a difference as the UN and NGOs fight on the front lines to improve healthcare, food security and sanitation in areas affected by the Ebola epidemic."
ccording to estimates by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the Ebola virus outbreak epidemic has ravaged Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, infecting more than 9,500 and killing more than 4500. The Ebola virus outbreak is making its way into the U.S. and Europe with the first Ebola infected victim dying in a Texas hospital recently. Other health workers attending to infected patients are also being treated for the virus.
