Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in the new Hunger Games movie Mockingjay looks fierce on the cover of Empire magazine. She is surely someone not to be trifled with. In this second to the last movie in the Hunger Games franchise, we see the actress in full combat mode as she and her fellow rebels take on the Capitol in an epic final battle that will decide the fate of many.
And though the franchise is about to come to an end, it looks like we won't be seeing the last of the Hunger Games characters any time soon. As with many of the big name, successful titles in Hollywood, everyone is still looking to extend the life of the franchise in any way they can. This is a win-win situation, as Hollywood doesn't want to let go after Hunger Games Mockingjay part 2 ends, and of course, fans would want to see more of their favorite characters.
According to the movie's director Francis Lawrence, this may not be as easy and as done a deal as it sounds. "It's a tough thing. It's a weird thing," Lawrence comments. "That world of Harry Potter, there's a lot to that world that you can explain. You can understand the appeal of telling another story, but can you actually do it without Harry, Hermione and those characters? Will people care as much? And I guess you can say the same thing about the Hunger Games world. There are a lot of past games and a lot of this world, but without Katniss, is it the same? Part of what I like about the series is the connection to things we think about and talk about now. What's the new version of that? That would be the tricky thing."
So there you have it folks, an extended universe on the Hunger Games franchise might not work without the titular character of Katniss Everdeen. But who knows? There might be more interesting characters and spin-offs that fans would be interested in. In any case, the last two installments of The Hunger Games are sure to be blockbuster hits.
