It's now official. "Captain America 3" will adapt Marvel's Civil War arc as Marvel officially announced the title for the third installment of its Captain America franchise, and Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans will go head to head in the film as Iron Man and Captain America, respectively.
"Captain America: Civil War", slated to hit the theaters on May 6, 2016, will be helmed by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are working with the Russos on the script.
Downey Jr. will reprise his Iron Man role but as antagonist as the film will highlight Captain America's character who is an anti-Superhuman Registration Act.
In an exclusive news by Variety, Downey Jr.'s appearance in the film was originally just short; however, he wanted a "substantial role". Marvel Entertainment Chief Ike Perlmutter disapproved it and asked the screenwriters to remove Iron Man in the script.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Downey Jr.'s sides continued the talks to work out the issues. With the way things are going now, we can see that the talks between the two parties went well and brought the Marvel universe into exploring the Civil War with more exposure for Iron Man.
In the Civil War arc, the two Avengers are separated by their principles in the Superhuman Registration Act filed by the government, wherein superheroes are required to register and reveal to the government their identities and work as police force. Captain America, alter ego of Steve Rogers, believes that the Act impends the civil liberties.
Captain America, and the other superheroes who have same principle as him, run to avoid the arrest. Iron Man or Tony Stark, on the other hand, supports the Superhuman Registration Act and tries his best to convince others to take his side including Spider-Man, who plays a big role in the Civil War comic storyline.
With the big part of the webslinger in the said storyline, Spider-Man is expected to appear as well in "Captain America 3". However, the chance is still hard to see in black and white because Spider-Man rights is still with Sony Pictures.
Unless Sony will allow Peter Parker to crossover, Marvel fans may not see him swinging in "Captain America 3". To fill in the missing huge part, Black Panther will most likely take the spotlight and will be introduced in the film before the standalone movie in 2017. Chadwick Boseman will play the role of Black Panther.
