Negotiations for Miguel Cotto's next fight, which is projected to be against Canelo Alvarez, has begun, as the middleweight clash is eyed for May 2015.

Miguel Cotto's next fight against Alvarez had been talked about for months now, after the reported end of the "cold war" between boxing promotion giants Top Rank Promotions (skippered by Bob Arum), and Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions.

De La Hoya himself confirmed to Ring TV that the talks for Miguel Cotto's next fight have already commenced.

"There are preliminary talks with the Cotto camp and obviously with Golden Boy on behalf of Canelo," De La Hoya announced. "So the fact is that Cotto wants the fight and the fact is that Canelo wants the fight."

"We have to iron out details, but I'm very confident that this fight is going to be made because both fighters understand that the fans are demanding for this one to happen," he added.

Both Cotto and Alvarez are coming off victories prior to the potential clash. Cotto last saw action in June, wherein he put on a dominant performance against Argentina's Sergio Martinez, which earned him both the WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight titles.

Alvarez, on the other hand, has continued on his winning ways after defeating Cuba's Erislandy Lara in a 12-round non-title bout in July. It was Canelo's second straight victory after having his 42-fight winning streak derailed by current pound-for-pound boxing king Floyd Mayweather Jr.

While no venue has been confirmed for Miguel Cotto's next fight, De La Hoya also confirmed that they are targeting May 2015 as the possible date. And like he had always been, "The Golden Boy" is optimistic that the said match-up would be a massive success.

"It will be for Cotto's title, absolutely," De La Hoya said. "This is the biggest fight that can be made and that people are talking about for next year, which is Cinco de Mayo. I have no doubt in my mind that this fight does closer to 1.5 million homes."
