The much awaited science fiction movie from Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan is delivering, both on the movie reviews and box office front. Most critics agree that the movie is spectacular, and as Nolan himself has said, the Interstellar movie will be analyzed and debated about after people have seen it. Now on the box office end, the movie earned a reported $80 million in international box office receipts from the 62 markets it opened to. The combined earnings of the movie has rocketed up to $132.2 million.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Interstellar movie is doing as well as Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity did in its international performance. But while Gravity clocked in at 90 minutes, Interstellar had a considerably longer running time at 169 minutes. Which just goes to show that the Matthew McConaughey starrer is a big draw even if its close to three hours in length. The movie was screened in every country in the world, but big foreign markets such as China and Japan has a later opening date for the movie.
Back at the North American box office, Interstellar placed second to Disney's Big Hero 6. Last weekend, the Interstellar movie raked in $50 million, coming just behind Big Hero Six which racked up $56.2 million. The Imax theater screenings worldwide showed a $20.6 million earnings for the movie, which is reportedly the biggest earnings for a movie that is released in November. It will be recalled that director Christopher Nolan has stated that the movie be screened and viewed in its Imax format.
Interstellar movie stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, and Michael Caine. The almost three hour movie revolves around Matthew McConaughey's character Cooper, and his journey to the far reaches of space in order to find an inhabitable planet where people on a dying earth could relocate to. Though the movie has much to do with space travel, worm holes, black holes and other such scientific subjects, the actors have maintained that it is at its heart, a love story between a father and his daughter.
