‘Downton Abbey’ Season 5 Extreme Ending Not Enough To Bring Up Ratings?

The finale for season 5 of "Downton Abbey" was beyond intense as Anna Bates was arrested for murdering her rapist Mr. Green, according to U.K's The Mirror.

It may have been the perfect end to season 5 as the series had been focused on the death of Tony Gillingham's valet Green, played by Nigel Harman, who attacked Anna in season 4 of "Downton Abbey."

Another semi-cliffhanger that viewers will be looking forward to being resolved in the next season will be Lady Rose's impending marriage to Atticus Aldridge which was reportedly hit with uncertainty as a photo scandal surfaced. Rose was left heartbroken as she was sent photos of her fiance with a prostitute by an anonymous person.

Season 5 of "Downton Abbey" closed the door on Lady Edith opening up to her father about her secret daughter, which actually turned out to go more smoothly then expected.

"As a matter of fact, and much to my surprise, I rather think I will," stated Lord Grantham when asked if he could love his granddaughter.

Despite the suspense that "Downton Abbey" has consistently provided for its viewers, the ratings have reportedly dropped for season 5, according to Deadline.

Season 5 concluded with reportedly 8.28M viewers watching while the finale for season 4 drew in 9.8M viewers. It was reportedly the top-rated season 4 episode as well.

Although "Downton Abbey" has continued to be well-received by critics, the ratings for season 5 has reportedly been consistently low. The period drama reportedly kicked off with 8.43M viewers, which was the lowest number for a debut since the series launch episode in 2010.

Despite the drop in ratings, "Downton Abbey" still has a loyal group of followers that will forever remain excited about the show.

"How good was @DowntonAbbey last night? Can't believe the last in the series! R we supposed to accept that Anna @JoFroggatt killed Mr Green?xx," wrote Twitter user Gemma Bissix.
