New "The Lego Movie 2" reports claim that Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be coming back to write the sequel.

According to Cinema Blend, the first movie's directors, Lord and Miller, will not be coming back to direct. Instead, they've hired animation co-director Chris McKay to helm the sequel.

News of potential cast members are already sparking fans' interest. One of the most talked about cast addition is Spider-Man's cameo appearance along with other Marvel superheroes including the "Avengers" and "X-Men."

However, one of the most exciting developments Lord and Miller shared recently was that the sequel will introduce more female characters. Will the new movie have a female lead?

"It's important to us that the movie plays broadly and that we inspire young women as much as we inspire young men," Lord told the BBC.

"I don't want to give spoilers but there will be more female characters and more female stuff."

"You can feel that the whole movie culture is now starting to wake up to the fact that half the audience are women. Frozen is reflective of that - and I think we are all going to find a great flourishing of women film makers and subject matter in the future," he added.

While Miller shared, "There's been a real shortage of [female protagonists] in recent years and I think that the near future will be very different."

"The Lego Movie 2" was originally slated for a 2017 release. But new reports suggest that the second movie will be pushed back to a later date because of another awesome Lego Movie.

Hero Complex reported that the "Lego Batman Movie" will take the original 2017 launch of "The Lego Movie 2." That means, the sequel (or prequel, more details later) will be given a 2018 premiere.
