The fate of Georges St-Pierre's next fight is still hanging on the balance, as "GSP" himself claims he is unsure if he will ever step back into the cage. The former UFC welterweight champion, however, has campaigned for teammate and protégé Rory MacDonald to be the next titleholder at 170-pounds.
Hopes for Georges St-Pierre's next fight were made alive after the former champion got together with UFC executives Dana White and Lorenzo Fertita in a lunch meeting in his hometown of Montreal, Canada last month. However, St-Pierre himself dispelled any rumors about alleged negotiations for his comeback.
In a recent interview with MMA Canada, speculations about Georges St-Pierre's next fight have been finally answered by none other than "GSP" himself.
"I don't know if I will go back to competition," St-Pierre said. "That's why I didn't call it 'a retirement,' I called it 'a break' because I don't know."
The 33-year old Canadian fighter even alluded to a statement by future boxing Hall-of-Famer Bernard "The Alien" Hopkins, who compared returning to fighting to a woman giving birth to a child.
"Bernard Hopkins has a good analogy," St-Pierre continued. "He says, 'You can't ask a woman who just gave birth and suffered for many hours if she will have another baby again.' Same thing for me when I got out of competition."
"Right now, I just came back from a knee injury, I took a break, had the knee injury, just came back from rehab," he added. "It's time for me to enjoy my life. Training, do it for fun. We'll see. I need some time."
St-Pierre also declared that welterweight top contender Rory MacDonald is the predecessor to his spot in the UFC. While MacDonald placed himself right into the cusp of title contention, "GSP" once again campaigned for his protégé to be the next champion.
"I hope my friend and training partner, Rory MacDonald, will get the title," St-Pierre said. "I really hope the best for him."
