Ebola Takes A Bite Of The Big Apple. 'New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says Ebola in NY was not 'unexpected' and that they were able to prepare for an Ebola diagnosis in New York.
New York's mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo said a doctor working with 'Doctors Without Borders' to treat infected Ebola patients tested positive for the virus after his return from West Africa.
"We want to state at the outset, there is no reason for New Yorkers to be alarmed," the mayor told USA Today
He added, "New Yorkers who have not been exposed to an infected person's bodily fluids are not at risk."
Reports say that Dr. Craig Spencer, 33, is on the staff of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Governor Cuomo was quoted as saying in the USA Today report, "We are as ready as one could be for this circumstances.'' New York's preparations for Ebola's entry into The Big Apple were much better than other locations in the U.S. such as Dallas, where one man infected from the Ebola virus outbreak died, and two nurses are being treated.
Dr. Spencer was cured for Ebola virus infection at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City.
"Dr. Spencer is Ebola free and New York City is Ebola free," added de Blasio. "It is a good feeling to hug a hero and we have a hero here in our midst," reported NBCNewYork.
In other Ebola in New York City news, a woman who died of a heart attack after travelling to West Africa was checked for Ebola virus infection. She returned to the U.S. 18 days ago and her name was not released.
The New York Times reported, "Five airports in the United States, including Kennedy International Airport in New York and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, have been screening passengers arriving from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali and Guinea. These travelers are monitored for 21 days and checked twice daily for temperatures and symptoms, according to guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
In other related Ebola Outbreak News, a surgeon returning from Sierra Leone, Dr. Martin Salia was treated at Nebraska Medical Center but died two days after he developed Ebola symptoms and was in critical condition.
