The worldwide movement to help save Benjy, the gay bull of Ireland, has been successful.
Benjy had been dubbed the "gay" bull after failing to impregnate any heifers at a County Mayo farm in western Ireland despite the fact that he was fertile, and was almost about to face execution, according to the Associated Press.
"At first I didn't take seriously that the bull could be gay but after seeking advice I know this can happen," stated the unnamed farmer to the Independent, according to CBC.
The farmer added, "The bull is now too old to castrate and turn into a bullock so I will keep him for the factory."
Ireland's Animal Rights Action Network stated on Tuesday that "The Simpsons" co-creator Sam Simon is reportedly paying for Benjy's transportation to an animal sanctuary in England. After it was announced that Benjy would be sent to a slaughterhouse, the movement to save the "gay bull" began as activists launched a social media campaign seeking $7,825 to send the bull to the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in England.
"The plight of little Benjy is hitting the hearts and households of Irish society with the reality of what will face this innocent boy if someone somewhere doesn't step in," stated Ireland's Animal Rights Action Network's John Carmody.
He continued, "As a gay man myself, I know only too well what it is like to be treated indifferently, that's why I hope we can give Benjy a second chance in life whilst helping to bring attention to the problems facing all gay people everywhere around the world, and of course the many other Benjy's that are brought to slaughter on a daily basis who are not so lucky."
About 300 donors contributed $6,200 to an ongoing fundraising drive organized by the British online magazine TheGayUK.
"All animals have a dire destiny in the meat trade, but to kill this bull because he's gay would've been a double tragedy," Simon said in a statement.
He added, "It thrills me to help PETA and ARAN make Benjy's fate a sanctuary rather than a sandwich."
