Jon Jones' next fight may be against Daniel Cormier, but one of his teammates Luke Rockhold says "Bones" has no chance against another teammate and reigning UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. Rockhold reasoned that Jones' style would not work against Velasquez.
Jon Jones next fight against Daniel Cormier is scheduled for UFC 182 on January 3rd. Rockhold, who trains with both Cormier and Velasquez at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Diego, California, has spoken up about the would-be possibility of the two champions facing each other.
"Not a chance," Rockhold simply said.
As he prepares Cormier for Jon Jones' next fight, Rockhold elaborated that the idea of "Bones" facing Velasquez is not too smart, adding that the Jones will not be able to contain the strength and power of the reigning UFC heavyweight champion.
"Cain, just the storm that he can put on you, you can't stop it," Rockhold said in a report by MMA Fighting. "I've trained with the guy, I've sparred with him so many times, and when he wants to get after you, he's going to get after you."
The idea of Jones facing Velasquez came about a week ago, after "Bones" himself declared that he is more interested in making super fights as he progresses with his already booming mixed martial arts career.
"Superfights I would go for," Jones said in a separate report. "I've been training with heavyweights for years now. I know what it feels like, and I think I would do really good against them. So that would be the next chapter."
However, Rockhold maintained that Velasquez will be too much for Jones to handle.
"You can only run away so long," Rockhold continued. "Jon Jones doesn't have the style to keep him off him. Cain is just a beast, he'll bull his way right through him."
