The benefits of eating yogurt are versatile, including providing calcium, vitamin D, protein and even probiotics, depending on the brand, according to the website Medical Daily.
A new study has added to the benefits by finding that eating yogurt could lower the risk of developing diabetes.
"Higher intake of yogurt is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, whereas other dairy foods and consumption of total dairy did not show this association," said Dr. Frank Hu, senior researcher and professor at Harvard School of Public Health, in a press statement.
For the study, researchers reportedly looked at data from three different studies of people who had their health and lifestyles followed, according to TIME. In the beginning of each of the studies, the participants reportedly filled out a questionnaire about their diets and history of chronic diseases.
Researchers reportedly followed up with participants and updated the data. Although another benefit of eating yogurt had been found, the researchers reportedly did not find any dairy consumption in general affected diabetes risk.
The researchers reportedly concluded that eating one 28g serving of yogurt per day was associated with an 18% lower risk of type 2 diabetes.
"Since we did not specifically assess types or brands of yogurt consumed by the participants, it is difficult to attribute the observed benefits to various components of yogurt," wrote the authors in the conclusion of their study.
