Barbara “B” Smith, a former model and award-winning restaurateur, had gone missing in Long Island last night, stated police in Long Island, according to the Washington Post.
The 65-year-old, who had opened up about suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in June, has reportedly been found in Manhattan on Wednesday at a diner, according to the U.K.’s The Daily Mail.
A patron at the eatery reportedly recognized the entrepreneur and TV host and contacted police. The reports that Barbara Smith had gone missing was even more alarming because the former model had done an interview with CBS News over the summer to talk about her battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
“Even with Alzheimer’s, I think that things are gonna work out,” stated Smith at the time.
She continued, “I’m gonna do my best to make it work out for me, and for as many people that I can possibly help, too.”
Barbara Smith had reportedly been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in October 2013 after more than four years of suffering from dementia symptoms.
Her husband, Dan Gasby, told MyFoxNY that his wife had taken a jitney from New York City to Sag Harbor, but got off in Southampton about 10 miles from her final destination. Smith reportedly got back on the jitney and returned to Manhattan where she was found.
For those who aren’t familiar with Barbara “B” Smith, the Pennsylvania native reportedly began her career as a fashion model, and made a name for herself after becoming the first African-American woman to grace the over of Mademoiselle magazine in 1976.
Smith reportedly has three restaurants in New York, Washington DC and the village of Sag Harbor in Long Island and has won the 2012 Silver Spoon award. She also launched her first decor collection for Bed Bath and Beyond in 2001.
Barbara Smith also has quite a solid fan base, evident from the tweets her supporters have been making.
