Peaceful Protest Made By St. Louis Rams Players Before Victory: Ferguson Demonstrators Continue With ‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’

Five St. Louis Rams players planned their own peaceful protest by raising their arms in a show of solidarity for Ferguson protestors before going onto the field for pregame introductions, according to CBS News.

Wide receivers Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt reportedly came out together first, soon followed by Stedman Bailey, Jared Cook and Chris Givens.

The five Rams players' "hands up, don't shoot" gesture, a symbol that protestors in Ferguson have been using for months, was made before their victorious 52-0 win against the Oakland Raiders last night. However, the peaceful protest of the Rams players may have taken a bit of attention away from the St. Louis team's incredible victory.

The St. Louis Police Officers Association reportedly stated that it's "profoundly disappointed" with the football players, according to CNN.

"I'd remind the NFL and their players that it is not the violent thugs burning down the buildings that buy their advertisers' products. It's cops and the good people of St. Louis and other NFL towns that do," the association's business manager, Jeff Roorda, was quoted as saying in a statement.

A Rams spokesman reportedly stated on Sunday that the team was not aware the gesture had been planned before the game against the Oakland Raiders.

The football players have stood by their peaceful protest, reportedly telling CNN affiliate KSDK-TV in St. Louis that they came up with the idea just before the game against the Oakland Raiders and wanted their action to represent a solidarity with the people of St. Louis and surrounding areas.

"We wanted to do something. This is our community," stated Cook.

Protests have continued in Ferguson since a grand jury's decision to decline to indict former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the death of teenager Michael Brown was announced.

"What happened was a tragedy, period," stated Austin.

The athlete added, "There are things out there bigger than football and we notice that."
