Ryan Leaf Released From Prison After Serving Two Years: Former NFL QB Gets A 2nd Chance At Life

Former No. 2 overall pick in the 1998 NFL draft, Ryan Leaf, was released from prison on Wednesday after serving two years of a five-year sentence for breaking into houses and stealing prescription drugs.

Leaf is regarded as one of the biggest "bust" in NFL history with all the hype he had coming out of college at Washington State, where he was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy during his junior season.

Leaf has already begun meeting with a parole officer in Great Falls, Mont., the Great Falls Tribune reported.

The Associated Press reported Leaf's prison stint could jeopardize his probation status in Texas, where in 2010 he pleaded guilty to obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and delivery of a simulated controlled substance. The judge in the case gave him two five-year suspended sentences.

Coming into the 1998 draft, the Indianapolis Colts had the first overall pick and were torn between Peyton Manning and Leaf. Both were projected to be franchise quarterbacks for years to come. Due to a distain Leaf had for Indianapolis, the Colts went with Manning, who will go down as one of, if not the greatest QB of all time.

The San Diego Chargers traded up from three to second overall with the Arizona Cardinals so that they could secure Leaf. His NFL career ended in four seasons with four different teams.
