Facebook to Have a 'Dislike' Button? CEO Mark Zuckerberg Shares His Thoughts on the Matter

While Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg intends people to further express their emotions and share their views better using the leading social network site on the planet, he believes that adding a “dislike” button is a terrible idea.

In a Q&A session last Friday at the Facebook headquarters based in Northern California, Mark Zuckerberg straightforwardly gave a thumbs-down to the idea of a button that would render posts undesirable or not-likeable at the social network.

"We are talking about a right way for people to easily express a broader array of emotions," Zuckerberg said, giving examples such as empathy, surprise, or laughter.

YouTube, for example, comes with a dislike button for viewers to use if there are videos that don’t seem to have any appeal to them. The only problem with such function, however, is that it tends to be the cause of many cyberbullying, accompanied by a barrage of disparaging comments.

“Some people have asked for a ‘dislike’ button because they want to say that thing isn't good. That's not something that we think is good for the world,” Zuckerberg added

In the end, however, Zuckerberg said that he is not closing his doors for the possibility of putting a “dislike” feature in the future. In fact, he said, “We don’t have anything coming out soon, but it is an important area of discussion… We need to figure out the right way to do it so that it is a force for good and not a force for bad in demeaning the posts that people are putting out there."

Facebook registers around 4.5 billion ‘likes’ per day according to its official figures. However, there is currently no means to ‘dislike’ posts, comments, photos, etc. Zuckerberg says the company is mulling this, but it’s not something they’re going to rush.

Nevertheless, for users who would really want to express their disapproval over something, they can still add a thumbs-down sticker in the comments section.
