The first gameplay footage of Adr!ft, a space-based survival adventure from studio Three One Zero has been released. We had an opportunity to go hands-on with very first version of the game, and have a discussion, with its developer, former Microsoft Studios creative director, Adam Orth.
Adr1ft is a game where we play as an astronaut drifting by the knotted remains of a space station going around the Earth, desperately searching for his journey home as the oxygen supply is decreasing. If that sounds horrifying, that is because it is, he is experiencing Oculu Rift, searching down on his way to his home planet with nothing but emptiness and debris.
The demo has shown 100% gameplay footage, although there is not much gameplay. Ort said in vague terms on traversal using the puzzle and thrusters possibilities of the environment which is zero-gravity. He wanted to make it really understandable that his vision for the game is just that: to make it a game.
Sure, he wants it to be something introspective, thoughtful, and atmospheric, but he was very quick to assure everyone at the presentation that direct interactivity is a huge part of the experience.
Another key distinction he made was that it isn't a "VR only" experience. While Adr1ft was built from day one to take advantage of the Oculus, it can absolutely be played without it on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The creator talks about his experience in the previous year by Twitter about his resignation from Microsoft, it was the best possible way but disarming. He only blames himself, and openly says that it resulted to a very down time for him. He went on record about the past, to state that Adr1ft is in many means an abstract recounting of what he went through, and about the game he needed to create. The released date of the game is in Summer 2015.
