It’s the prime time for Christmas present ideas to prompt parents to go on the search for the perfect gift.
If anyone had ideas to give a toy gun as a Christmas present, you should seriously rethink your plans.
The state attorney general reportedly sent cease-and-desist letters to some of America’s largest retailers for selling toy guns that look too much like the real thing, according to NY Daily News. The letters reportedly stated that retailers, including Wal-Mart, Sears, Amazon, Kmart And ToyArsenal, were violating a New York law that prohibits selling realistic-looking toy guns that do not carry prominent markings.
In New York, it’s reportedly against the law to sell imitation guns in realistic colors unless they have orange stripes which can’t be removed, according to the news outlet ABC22Now.
“When toy guns are mistaken for real guns, there can be tragic consequences,” stated Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
He added, “Retailers cannot put children and law enforcement at risk by selling toy guns that are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.”
The recent investigation into the sale of toy guns has reportedly found that they’ve been advertised as “realistic looking” and “full size.” In New York State, four people have reportedly been killed since 1997 and a child has been seriously wounded because police have mistaken toy guns for real ones.
Schneiderman aides reportedly stated that the investigation regarding these toy guns is ongoing and that stores can be fined $1,000 for each violation and could potentially face other fines as well.
