Eight children between the ages of 18 months and 15 years were reportedly found dead in their Cairns home in Australia by their brother, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
The 37-year-old mother of the seven of the eight children has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of murder and is under police guard at a hospital and in stable condition, stated police Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar at a press conference, according to CNN.
The 20-year-old brother who found his siblings and mother inside the home is reportedly not a suspect.
“They’re only babies,” Lisa Thaiday, a relative of the family told CNN affiliate Seven Networks.
Australian media has reported that at least some of the victims in the family were believed to have been stabbed, but Asnicar reportedly declined to confirm that, stating that police are waiting for autopsy reports.
Specialist police officers will reportedly be arriving from Brisbane to help with the investigation, stated Asnicar.
“This is not a small job. We’re not taking this lightly at all. We will cover every angle before this is finished,” stated Asnicar.
The children that were killed were reportedly a part of the local community of Torres Strait Islanders, an indigenous people from the region.
Mayor of the Torres Strait Island Regional Council, Fred Gela, stated that he was related to the family, and that the woman who had been taken to the hospital is a cousin.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the recent tragic events that have occurred in Cairns today,” stated Gela.
