‘Captain America: Civil War’ Will Be Different From The Graphic Novel; Will The Cap Suffer The Same Consequence In The Film Adaptation? Storyline Adjusted To Evans And Downey Jr.’s Characters

"Captain America: Civil War" will be different to the graphic novel it's based on, according to writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The adaptation will likely be custom-tailored to the personas Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans played, with outcome which pits Captain America and Iron Man in the end.

Downey and Evans are practically interchangeable with their characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with "Captain America: Civil War" confirmed to follow on the heels of "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Marvel is setting up both superheroes for an epic run-in.

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely co-wrote "Captain America: The First Avenger," and shared their thoughts on the third installment in an interview with Screenrant.

Rumors about the third Captain America film remained on the bench, but it's confirmed it will be based on the epic event portrayed in the graphic novel. In "Civil War," the reckless mistake of a group of younger superheroes provokes the need to reveal superheroes' real identities, also the need to enlist them as operatives of the government.

Captain America and Iron Man took opposing sides of the debate, with Cap's distrust of the government and Tony Stark involved in its affairs.

Markus and McFeely said the adaptation poses new challenges, considering how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has developed.

"There's a depth of myth [to the Civil War storyline]... It's been on and off the table for a while, let's put it that way, and it's a challenge to do it and make sure that all the characters that we've established, and everyone's established in the MCU are serviced and sound correct, right?"

McFeely admits the roles portrayed by Evans and Downey Jr. are major considerations in "Captain America: Civil War."

"There isn't a Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans who has helped create the character so we need to make sure that that template gets adjusted and what have you in order to make sure it services these characters and not just sort of rip off their parts and make them look like them."

The "Captain America: Civil War" release date is on May 6 next year.
